Inclement Weather Response Plan
The policy of Facility Services is to maintain reasonably safe access to campus facilities in the event of snow storms or ice accumulation. The goal is to remove snow or slush from walks and drives before it becomes compacted and re frozen, and to provide reasonable traction for vehicles and pedestrians through the judicious use of sand.
The primary person responsible for coordinating activities of this plan is the Exterior Maintenance Supervisor. In his/her absence, the Landscape Maintenance Supervisor assumes these duties. Decision to implement plan is based upon weather reports and consultation with the Operations Manager, the Office of Environmental Health & Safety, DPS, Campus Safety Advisory Committee, or the University Administration. The highest priorities for clearing, sanding and de-icing will be exterior stairways, accessibility ramps, curb ramps, major walks and crosswalks, footbridges, lighted walkways as indicated on the "Campus at Night"
map, and any walk surface greater than 5% slope. If possible, these routes are to be accessible by 8:00 AM on days of normal campus activities.
Levels of Required Activity
- Minimal accumulation may require shift change. Normal scheduled maintenance activities resume upon completion
- Moderate accumulation may require shift change and overtime. Non-essential maintenance activities are restricted or stopped.
- Heavy or prolonged accumulation On the order of the Director or on-call Administrator, all non-essential Facility Services activity ceases or is restricted. All available & capable personnel are assigned to assist the Exterior Team for snow removal. Shift changes and overtime are probable. Temporary workers or contractors may be requested. Addition rental equipment may be required.
Team Responsibilities
Exterior Team At all times, clears campus walks, steps, ramps, streets, and parking lots. Spreads sand or de-icer as needed. Coordinates activities of other shops during Level III storms. Operates snow clearing equipment at any time, even if requiring shift changes. May require borrowing non-essential 2-way radios. Repair Team On swing shift, clears entries, steps, landings, and ramps. Spread deicer or sand as necessary. Swing shift supervisor assigns personnel. Central Support Team Clears steps and ramps on day shift. Assists Exterior Team as needed. Custodial Services On night shift, clears entries, steps, landings, and ramps. Spreads dei-cer or sand as necessary. Custodial Supervisors assign personnel. Mobile Equipment Prepares critical equipment for service including possible tire chain installations. Other Shops and Teams Loan non-essential 2-way radios to Exterior Team. During Level III storms, personnel may be temporarily re assigned by their supervisor to the Exterior Team for snow removal.
