Responsibilities

Also known as Campus & Grounds, we are responsible for the maintenance of nearly everything on the main campus exterior (above and below ground). We are also involved in most exterior improvement projects. We have little involvement with facilities off-campus such as Athletic Dept. facilities and off-campus housing.

Turf Care: Green lawns requires mowing, edging, watering, re-seeding, and fertilizing. Our goal is to maintain vigorous, healthy lawns with minimal or no use of pesticides.

Planting Bed Maintenance: Our plants require continual attention and care by our skilled Groundskeepers. All trimmings, plant debris, and weeds from these areas are composted.
Tree Care: We have over 3,300 trees representing over 500 species at the University of Oregon. Our Campus Arborist, John Anthony, performs continual inspections and maintenance on the towering flora.

Landscape Irrigation: You may think western Oregon as rainy and wet, but we have quite dry summers. Without irrigation, our turf, plants, and trees would become stressed and vulnerable to pests. Most of campus utilizes automatic irrigation controls, which we are in the process of these to computerized, weather-based controls. This system helps us meet our goals to conserve water while promoting plant health.

Litter Pickup: Over 25,000 students, faculty, and staff on 230 acres of campus requires a continual effort to keep the campus clean.

Campus Color Spots: We plant bulbs, flowers and plants to keep campus colorful all year.
Landscape Design: The beauty of our campus involves careful planning and design.

Leaf Control and Composting: Over 3,300 trees produce considerable leaf debris in the fall. Our goal is to prevent leaves from creating unsafe conditions on walks, clogging drains, and smothering lawns. All the leaves collected are then composted. Go to the Campus Recycling Composting page to see details.

Snow and ice removal: Eugene gets very few snow or ice storms, but when they occur our team has primary responsibility of making walks and drives as safe as possible.

Tree and Bench Memorials: We plant trees and install benches and plaques to honor those who have served or contributed to the university. See our memorials site to find out how you can donate.

Campus Furnishings: We are responsible for all the non-living, essential fixtures on campus such as benches, bike racks, bollards, map stations, shelters, fences, retaining walls, trash cans, smokers posts, and light poles.
Paving: All the campus walks, plazas, ramps, and stairs require periodic cleaning and/or resurfacing.

Parking Lot Maintenance: We assist the Department of Public Safety in routine cleaning and resurfacing of parking lots.

Campus Signs: Most of our signs are made by our skilled sign maker on our Construction Team. We are responsible for installation and maintenance of nearly all campus signs.

Underground Utility Locating: Before any digging occurs, we make sure no vital utilities are in the way or could be damaged.
Utility Mapping: We are continually updating underground utility maps. Errors could cause serious risks to future excavation operations.

Storm Water System: We are responsible for avoiding unwanted lakes and puddles on campus. Through the use of bio-swales, green roofs, a healthy tree canopy, and pervious paving, we are slowing down storm water movement by promoting ground infiltration, transpiration, and evaporation.

Pest Management: In addition to pest control on campus grounds, we are also responsible for pest control in academic buildings. Our program utilizes the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This approach stresses prevention and the use of non-chemical controls when possible. It also limits the use of pesticides unless pest populations are over predetermined‘Action Thresholds'. Our IPM Program is under the guidance and oversight of the department of Environmental Health & Safety.

Special projects: We are involved in several special projects with other campus departments.
