Turbine Generator #3 Refit

On Thursday, March 27, 2003, the Central Power Station restarted Turbine Generator #3 after a complete overhaul.  This overhaul, which consists of dismantling the turbine, the generator and other associated parts, reconditioning them, and putting everything back together took approximately 4 months to complete.  This process, which is required by law to take place every 5 years, took an extended amount of time to complete to facilitate the repair of some previously damaged components.

This turbine generator is rated to generate 3 megawatts at capacity and commonly generates approximately 2-2.5 megawatts.  Campus use of electricity is approximately 6 megawatts during the winter and 9 megawatts during the summer.  Thus, the 2.5 megawatts generated by #3 in addition to the 1.5 megawatts generated by #1 could produce up to 2/3 of the campus demand during the winter and 1/2 of the campus demand during the summer (assuming both units are operating at capacity simultaneously).  This saves not only on electrical costs, but on peak usage costs as well.
